About Desmond

 

Education

Prior to obtaining his Juris Doctor degree in Law from Singapore Management University (SMU), Desmond graduated with a Master of Science in Management Science (Finance) from Stanford University (California), and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Aerospace) from Cornell University (New York).

He received the opportunity to study abroad after being awarded the Singapore Airlines (Overseas) (Engineering) Scholarship (2001) — almost a decade before he again became recipient of the Singapore Management University Juris Doctor (Law) Scholarship (2011).

Desmond is also an alumnus of St. Joseph's Institution and Victoria Junior College in Singapore.

Career

Desmond’s career as a lawyer was preceded by a position in the engineering division of Singapore Airlines from 2007 to 2011, where he fulfilled and completed his scholarship bond. There, Desmond worked in various engineering and management roles spanning Technical Services Engineering, Strategic Aircraft Fleet Management, and Commercial Supplies Management — in which he simultaneously managed two separate engineering sections and a combined portfolio of S$150 million dollars of aircraft parts during the financial crisis of 2007 to 2008.

Some highlights of Desmond’s career include being a guest judge for the SMU Law moot team's practice round for the Sarin Air Law Moot Competition, acting for a client in a military court martial hearing, and acting for a commercial client in a claim for S$1.34 million in the Supreme Court of Singapore.

Personal Life

Desmond has repeatedly tried and failed in cultivating a herb garden. When he is not drowning innocent plants, he enjoys cooking and creative writing. You may read samples of his creative writing here. He also manages the Instagram account of his beloved dog, Pumpkin the Maltipoo.
